Available Physical Memory Lower Than Total

On a computer that is running Windows 7, the usable memory (RAM) may be less than the installed memory. For example, a 32-bit version of Windows 7 may report that there is only 3.5 GB of usable system memory on a computer that has 4 GB of memory installed.Or, a 64-bit version of Windows 7 may report that there is only 7.1 GB of usable system memory on a computer that has 8 GB of memory installed.Note The amount of usable memory in the examples are not exact amounts. Usable memory is a calculated amount of the total physical memory minus "hardware reserved" memory. To view the installed memory and the usable memory in Windows 7, follow these steps:

available physical memory lower than total

For example, if you have a video card that has 256 MB of on-board memory, that memory must be mapped within the first 4 GB of address space. If 4 GB of system memory is already installed, part of that address space must be reserved by the graphics memory mapping. Graphics memory mapping overwrites a part of the system memory. These conditions reduce the total amount of system memory that is available to the operating system. For more information about how to determine how memory is used on your computer, see the "Physical Memory Allocation in Windows 7" topic in the "More Information" section.

Make sure that the memory arrangement is correct Refer to the User's Guide of the computer to determine in what order the memory modules should be inserted into the memory slots. The system may require you to use specific slots when you are not using all the available slots. For example, the computer has four slots available. But you may have to use slot 1 and slot 3 if you want to use only two memory modules.

Check whether memory standoff cards are used If you use a memory standoff card to hold multiple memory modules on the computer, the system may require specific configurations for this scenario. Therefore, the usable memory may be less than expected.

Windows 7 reports how much physical memory is currently installed on your computer. Windows NT-based operating systems before Windows Vista Service P1 report how much memory is available to the operating system. The available memory reported in these earlier versions of Windows does not include hardware reserved memory. This is a reporting change only. You will see this reporting change in Windows Vista SP1 and later versions of Windows in the following locations:

When the physical RAM that is installed on a computer equals the address space that is supported by the chipset, the total system memory that is available to the operating system is always less than the physical RAM that is installed. For example, consider a computer that has an Intel 975X chipset that supports 8 GB of address space. If you install 8 GB of RAM, the system memory that is available to the operating system will be reduced by the PCI configuration requirements. In this example, PCI configuration requirements reduce the memory that is available to the operating system by an amount that is between approximately 200 MB and approximately 1 GB. The reduction depends on the configuration.

If you believe that your device is not performing as it should even after throwing Gigabytes of RAM into it, it is likely that your system is not utilizing its full RAM capacity.Fix Usable memory less than actual installed RAMif(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[300,250],'itechtics_com-medrectangle-4','ezslot_7',149,'0','0']);__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-itechtics_com-medrectangle-4-0');This article discusses how you can fix the issue of the usable memory being less than what is physically available to it.

As we said, there can be various reasons why your system has less usable memory than there are:The operating system installed has a 32-bit architecture. The devices installed on your computer have reserved memory for specific functions.if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[250,250],'itechtics_com-leader-4','ezslot_20',193,'0','0']);__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-itechtics_com-leader-4-0');if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[250,250],'itechtics_com-leader-4','ezslot_21',193,'0','1']);__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-itechtics_com-leader-4-0_1');.leader-4-multi-193border:none!important;display:block!important;float:none!important;line-height:0;margin-bottom:15px!important;margin-left:auto!important;margin-right:auto!important;margin-top:15px!important;max-width:100%!important;min-height:250px;min-width:250px;padding:0;text-align:center!importantThe motherboard does not have the ability to handle the installed amount of RAM.BIOS settings are configured to reserve memory.BIOS is outdated.if(typeof ez_ad_units!='undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[336,280],'itechtics_com-mobile-leaderboard-1','ezslot_22',194,'0','0']);__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-itechtics_com-mobile-leaderboard-1-0');The version of Windows installed. The factors affecting the usable memory can be any of the above-mentioned.The 32-bit OS is not programmed to handle more than 4 GB of memory, resulting in a total usable memory no greater than 3.2 GB. Here, the remaining 0.8 GB of memory is mapped by other components such as BIOS, GPU, and other devices. Once the memory sectors are mapped, they are no longer available to the OS.

Other factors include the OS not supporting the amount of memory installed on the computer. Here is some information on a few operating systems which tell us their maximum supported memory capacity:OSMaximum supported memoryAll 32-bit Windows OS4 GBWindows 10 Enterprise x646 TBWindows 10 Education x642 TBWindows 10 Pro for Workstations x646 TBWindows 10 Pro x642 TBWindows 10 Home x64128 GBThe list does not end here. Multiple other factors can also cause your computer to be able to use less memory than it has. This has been addressed in the section below.Fix usable memory less than actual memoryThere are several tasks you can perform to allot more usable RAM to your OS. Here is what you need to do:

As you may have already noticed from the table given above, 64-bit operating systems support more memory as compared to 32-bit operating systems. Hence, we would suggest that if you are using a 32-bit OS, you switch to a 64-bit architecture. Unfortunately, the process requires a fresh installation of OS. You can refer to our page to download and install Windows 10 64-bit.To check your current OS architecture, simply open the About page in the Settings app and look for it in front of System Type.Check if RAM modules are seated properlyThis may seem like an unnecessary step, but consumers did come to realize that one of their RAM modules was not physically seated correctly, and was therefore undetectable by the computer. Therefore, ensure that all modules are seated and accessible by computer. To verify this, run the wmic memorychip get capacity command in Command Prompt.

A warm welcome to the HP community. A very good day to you. I reviewed the post regarding the amount of RAM installed and the amount of used memory and available free ram.I will be delighted to assist you here.

Cause: A Windows best practice is to set the paging file size to equal to or greater than the total amount of available physical memory. Garbage collection is typically more effective at automatic recovery of heap memory when managed heap size approximates paging size. When paging file size is smaller than RAM size, new allocations of managed memory are granted, which leads to more garbage collection and higher CPU usage.

In the Virtual Memory dialog, select the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box, or clear the check box and specify a paging file size that is equal to or greater than the physical memory that is available on the computer. We recommend that you either allow the system to manage the page file size or to set it at 150% of the size of the physical RAM.

To use MMF, more disk space than system memory is required. The disk space is checked at server startup and logged into DSSErrors.log with a message similar to one of the following errors below. If enabled, it is also checked on subsequent publishings, with additional logging only if the amount of disk drops too low.

rabbitmqctl set_vm_memory_high_watermark fraction isexecuted. By default, when the RabbitMQ server uses above 40%of the available RAM, it raises a memory alarm and blocks allconnections that are publishing messages. Once the memory alarm has cleared (e.g. dueto the server paging messages to disk or delivering them toclients that consume and acknowledge the deliveries) normal service resumes.

The default memory threshold is set to 40% of installedRAM. Note that this does not prevent the RabbitMQ serverfrom using more than 40%, it is merely the point at whichpublishers are throttled. Erlang's garbage collector can, inthe worst case, cause double the amount of memory to be used(by default, 80% of RAM). It is strongly recommended that OSswap or page files are enabled.

The memory alarm system is not perfect. While stopping publishingwill usually prevent any further memory from being used, it is quitepossible for other things to continue to increase memoryuse. Normally when this happens and the physical memory is exhaustedthe OS will start to swap. But when running with a limited addressspace, running over the limit will cause the VM to terminate or killedby an out-of-memory mechanism of the operating system.

It is possible toset vm_memory_high_watermark_paging_ratio to agreater value than 1.0. In this case queueswill not page their contents to disc. If this causes the memory alarmto go off, then producers will be blocked as explained above.

In this case, the vm_memory_high_watermarkconfiguration value is used to scale the assumed 1GBRAM. With the default value ofvm_memory_high_watermark set to 0.4,RabbitMQ's memory threshold is set to 410MB, thus it willthrottle producers whenever RabbitMQ is using more than410MB memory. Thus when RabbitMQ can't recognize yourplatform, if you actually have 8GB RAM installed and youwant RabbitMQ to throttle producers when the server is usingabove 3GB, set vm_memory_high_watermark to 3.
